More than 100 firefighters tackled two blazes on South Africa’s Table Mountain on Wednesday 26 February, with authorities reporting significant progress in controlling the fires that threatened Cape Town. The South African National Parks deployed 115 firefighters along with four helicopters and two planes.

The fires have been active since at least Sunday, coinciding with a meeting of G20 finance ministers in the city, which faced no danger.

The incident is not uncommon as fires are expected in the region during the hot, dry summer months.

The fires in recent times have not caused any reported injuries, and have been controlled by authorities after some time.

For now, firefighters will remain on the mountain overnight to monitor for potential flare-ups due to winds.
