20 Jul SFPE publishes 6th Edition of Fire Protection Engineering Handbook

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has published the 6th Edition of the SFPE Handbook of Fire Protection Engineering, introducing new sections and updated content covering a range of developments in fire protection engineering, science and technology. First published in 1988, the handbook is used by fire protection engineers, researchers, code officials and students. According to SFPE, the latest edition includes significant updates and expanded content reflecting current issues facing the profession. Among the additions are two new sections: Fire Test Data for Engineering Methods, comprising four new chapters, and Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Fires and Environmental Impacts, comprising seven new chapters. The 6th Edition also features new and updated chapters covering topics including fire walls, fire investigations, flame extinction by active suppression, structural fire engineering, lithium-ion batteries and energy storage, refrigerants, warehouse storage challenges, and fire and life safety during modifications, additions and demolition. According to SFPE, the handbook also addresses emerging topics including wildland-urban interface fire dynamics and evacuation, fire risks associated with lithium-ion battery storage, engineering methods using fire test data, sustainable and resilient fire protection strategies, and risk analysis in the healthcare, nuclear and mass transportation sectors. The publication was developed by more than 130 contributors from academia, research institutions, consulting firms and industry organisations worldwide, supported by section editors covering 11 technical subject areas.
