08 Mar Study finds fire risks in more than a quarter of grid battery energy storage systems
A new report has found that lithium-ion is vital for large-scale renewable energy growth, however, there are major considerations.
The report by Clean Energy Associates found that over one-quarter of grid battery systems could risk fire ignition due to how they are manufactured.
The data indicated that out of 64% of BESS cell manufacturers,1,300 manufacturing issues were identified.
CEA said: “The past several years have shown that thermal runway poses a significant risk to the energy storage industry.”
The thermal management issues were found to be caused by “system level” defects in 48% of the findings.
The audit also found that even though there are strict safety requirements in highly automated cell manufacturing processes, 30% of the quality issues noted were due to lengthy production processes and higher precision requirements.
