Arcserve Southern Africa has emphasised the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to cyber security and data protection to strengthen a business’s security posture.

Organisations can utilise resources such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 and ISO/IEC 27001 to implement guidelines and best practices for managing security risks and establishing information security management systems.

Byron Horn-Botha, Arcserve Southern Africa Business Unit Head, stressed the need for regular risk assessments, implementation of strong access controls, encryption of sensitive data, regular system updates and patching, staff education on security best practices, and the use of robust firewall and intrusion detection and prevention systems.

Furthermore, Horn-Botha highlights the importance of conducting regular security audits and assessments, as well as the addition of a security information and event management (SIEM) system to analyse security logs.

It is essential for business leaders to recognise the prevalence of security compromises in South Africa, as evidenced by the Information Regulator receiving over 150 data breach notifications per month.

As such, companies should prioritise the establishment and maintenance of effective security measures to protect their data and systems.
