07 Nov BAE nuclear shipyard has ‘no nuclear risk’

Initial investigations indicate that a fire at a nuclear submarine shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, had a ‘limited impact,’ according to BAE Systems.

The blaze, which broke out early Wednesday in the main facility, resulted in seven people being hospitalised as a precaution, but all have since been released. Cumbria Police confirmed there was ‘no nuclear risk.’

BAE stated that a multi-agency response helped prevent significant damage to the shipyard and submarines.

Work on Astute Boat 6 is ongoing, and both the Dreadnought and SSN-AUKUS programs are progressing.

Defence Minister Maria Eagle emphasised that there was never a nuclear risk and praised the response of the emergency services.
