The recent disruption of Red Sea submarine cables served as a stark reminder of the fragility of our global digital infrastructure, degrading internet services across parts of the Middle East, India and Pakistan. While repair and rerouting efforts were underway, the event underscored a critical lesson for businesses worldwide: in an increasingly interconnected yet unpredictable world. Digital resilience is paramount.

The incident prompts us to re-evaluate our approach to data management and infrastructure design. Organisations that are vulnerable often have gone ‘all in’ with a single vendor, rather than adopting a multi-cloud strategy for their data platforms. An hour of internet outage can cost millions in critical sectors such as banking, retail and aviation; there are severe consequences for those who are not prepared for such disruptions.

Resilience in the face of disruption

During this event, organisations working with specialists such as Cloudera reported no disruptions in their systems. This resilience is attributed to multi-region control planes. Many organisations bring their compute workloads to their data within their own sovereign platforms, which are not impacted by systems and resources managed by third parties.

This experience reinforces the critical business need for data agility to withstand internet infrastructure shocks. The Red Sea disruption highlights the importance of understanding that things will change beyond our control, and proactive planning and mitigation are essential.

The imperative of digital sovereignty

Beyond immediate disruptions, the incident amplifies growing concerns about digital sovereignty. Many European enterprises are heavily dependent on importing digital technologies and services from other countries, including non-European cloud providers. This dependence raises questions about potential economic policy interference, where cloud services could become an economic pawn, leading to serious consequences for European customers.

Digital sovereignty is about enabling businesses to freely decide where they store and process their data, whether on-premises, in a private cloud, a public cloud, or a sovereign cloud operated independently within a region or country. Retaining maximum control over data allows companies to more easily implement compliance requirements and ensure their data remains secure and accessible, regardless of geopolitical tensions or infrastructure failures.

To navigate these challenges, companies must integrate flexibility and agility into their solutions, recognising change as a constant. This means embracing a modern data architecture built on a unified hybrid data platform. Such a platform combines data management, analytics, transactional and data science services across both public and private clouds, as well as edge environments.

A hybrid data platform provides consistent security and governance across all platforms, ensuring that sensitive information is protected through comprehensive encryption and tokenization, and enabling a zero-trust architecture.
  • Automated Workload Placement: An intelligent decision framework that automatically places or moves workloads in response to changing circumstances ensures continuous, optimal delivery, balancing cost and performance.
  • 100% Data Access: Organisations need secure access to 100% of their data, in all forms and locations, to make fully informed decisions and fuel AI initiatives.

The ability to strategically utilise data is becoming a guarantee of economic survival. In challenging times, innovation, driven by trusted data-based decisions and new business models, is more crucial than ever to secure future competitiveness. The rise of agentic AI, designed to autonomously execute tasks without human intervention, further underscores the need for robust data foundations. More than half (53%) of IT leaders cite data privacy as their main barrier to implementing the technology. Therefore, investing in secure, well-governed data platforms from the start is essential for responsible AI adoption.

By laying these foundations, organisations not only withstand infrastructure shocks and meet growing regulatory requirements such as DORA, but also pave the way for future technologies.
