03 Jun Fires disrupt South Africa’s Cycle Tour

The year’s South Africa’s Cycle Tour, the world’s largest bicycle race, will be shorter due to road closures caused by fires on Table Mountain in Cape Town.

The fires, which started on Sunday, have led to the closure of several roads along the 109-kilometre route, including the iconic Chapman’s Peak Drive, making it unsafe for cyclists.

As a result, the cycle route will be shortened to 47 kilometres, according to David Bellairs, the marketing director for the Cape Town Cycle Tour. The safety of cyclists, especially on Chapman’s Peak, cannot be guaranteed at this time.

Despite the challenges posed by the fires, an estimated 35,000 cyclists, including many international participants, are still expected to take part in the race on Sunday.

The fires have caused significant damage to mountain vegetation and led to the destruction of three homes, as well as damage to several others. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, although one firefighter was hospitalized for burns.

Efforts to contain the fires have been underway, with firefighters and helicopters working to manage the situation. While more than 500 residents were initially evacuated, most have now been able to return home, according to disaster management officials.
