Ford halts production of electric F-150 following battery fire

Ford Motor Co. has stopped production and halted shipments of the electric F-150 temporarily, after a battery caught fire during a pre-delivery quality check.

In a statement released last week the company said it did not believe that F-150 Lightning electric pickups that were already in use were affected by the battery issue. The company has also not ordered dealers to stop selling the affected vehicle.

Ford spokeswoman Emma Bergg said: “During a standard Lightning pre-delivery quality inspection, one vehicle displayed a battery issue. We believe we have identified the root cause of this issue.

“By the end of next week, we expect to conclude our investigation and apply what we learn to the truck’s battery production process; this could take a few weeks. We will continue holding already-produced vehicles while we work through engineering and process updates.”

The batteries used in the trucks are supplied by South Korean supplier, SK Innovation.

Earlier this year Daimler warned Mercedes Benz owners that a technical defect could lead to a fire in some affected models.
