02 Mar Ghana’s Interior Minister reveals new digital fire safety system to boost compliance

Ghana has taken a major step towards modernising fire safety regulation with the launch of an ambitious digital platform designed to strengthen compliance and protect lives and property nationwide.

The Muntaka Mohammed‑Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, officially introduced the Automated Fire Safety Compliance System (AFCAS) at a ceremony in Accra this week, describing fire safety not as a luxury but as a “national necessity” underpinning citizen safety, investor confidence and economic stability.

The new system marks a shift from paper-based, manual inspection procedures to a technology-driven regime aimed at simplifying engagement between the public and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

AFCAS is expected to streamline fire safety inspections, reduce turnaround times and improve service delivery across homes, businesses, schools, offices and public institutions.

According to the Minister, the digital platform will enable real-time compliance tracking, early identification of fire risks and improved coordination during inspections.

He said AFCAS aligns with broader government efforts to leverage technology, reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and make Ghana a more attractive environment for business and investment.

The Chief Fire Officer, Madam Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, welcomed the initiative as a significant step forward for the GNFS.

She noted that the previous manual system posed challenges for both inspectors and the public, and that the new platform will improve interaction, support revenue generation and enhance overall service quality with a nationwide rollout planned.

Officials say the introduction of AFCAS will also help ensure that fire safety equipment brought into the country meets required standards, strengthening regulation and public safety.
