International Day of Peace highlights the link between peace and security

The International Day of Peace on 21 September will highlight the importance of investing in stability, cooperation and conflict prevention, with the United Nations calling on governments, organisations and communities to contribute to building safer and more peaceful societies.

The theme for the 2026 observance is “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day”. The UN says the focus recognises the role of people working at community level to lay the foundations for stability and lasting peace.

For the security sector, the message highlights the close relationship between peace and effective security. Preventing conflict and instability requires more than responding to incidents after they occur. It also involves identifying risks early, strengthening resilience, protecting communities and maintaining the institutions and services people rely on.

The UN has described peace as more than the absence of war, linking it to safety, dignity, opportunity and cooperation. Its peacebuilding work includes conflict prevention, reconciliation, justice and efforts to address underlying causes of instability.

This approach places increasing importance on cooperation between governments, security agencies, communities and international organisations. Effective information sharing, crisis preparedness and coordinated responses can all contribute to reducing the impact of threats and helping communities remain resilient during periods of instability.

The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 and, since 2001, 21 September has been observed as a day of non-violence and ceasefire.

For security professionals, the day provides an opportunity to consider how investment in prevention, resilience and cooperation can complement traditional security measures – helping create the conditions in which communities, businesses and critical services can operate safely.
