Kenya-UAE helicopter deal moves to strengthen the nation’s defence

Kenya and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are set to strengthen their defence cooperation, with the UAE preparing to donate light helicopters to enhance the capabilities of the Kenya Air Force in its operations against the militant group Al-Shabaab.

The donation of these helicopters, likely sourced from UAE manufacturers such as Northstar Aviation and Bell, aims to improve Kenya’s air mobility, surveillance, and rapid response operations, particularly along the Somali border.

For Kenya, which has been actively involved in regional counterterrorism- especially through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) deployment in Somalia under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS)- this support is essential for modernising its aerial fleet.

Discussions between senior UAE officials, including Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Kenyan President William Ruto highlight the shared interests of both nations in countering regional threats.

“Indeed this comes at a much needed time when our country is engaged in multi-fronts in pursuit of peace and security along our borders and in the region,” said Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Ambassador Raychell Omamo. “The resources required in security operations are often many and can be very expensive. To this end, the Government of the Republic of Kenya acknowledges with appreciation this kind of gesture by His Highness.”

The helicopter donation is expected to enhance Kenya’s operational capabilities and tactical flexibility, particularly in remote regions where ground operations encounter logistical obstacles.

As both countries continue to work together, this cooperation may mark a shift in UAE-East Africa relations, founded on common goals to combat violent attacks in the region.

Previously, the UAE donated nine Airbus AS550C3 Fennec helicopters to Kenya in 2018.

However, this new news comes after the Kenya Defence Forces received newly refurbished Z9 helicopters from China Aviation Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) last year.

“The partnership encompasses various aspects, including military equipment procurement, technology transfer, joint training, and strategic cooperation, all contributing to Kenya’s operational readiness,” a KDF statement said at the time.

Lt Gen Tarus made the announcement, stating: “Our partnership fosters a culture of collaboration and trust, together, we will continue to innovate, improve, and push the boundaries of military aviation. Success in the airspace relies not only on advanced technology but also on the strength of the relationships between nations.”

The country also received eight UH-1 ‘Huey’ and eight MD500 helicopters from the United States, as well as 150 armoured vehicles to improve regional security following Kenyan President William Ruto’s visit to the US in the same year.
