Unauthorised drone operations in wildfire zones have posed serious challenges for firefighting efforts, as demonstrated by a recent incident during the Los Angeles wildfires.

A Canadian Super Scooper aircraft was grounded after colliding with a drone, forcing a temporary suspension of air response operations for at least half an hour. Southern California officials have urged the public to refrain from flying drones in these critical areas.

This incident is not isolated; during the Jasper National Park wildfire in July 2024, illegal drone activity led to the grounding of all aircraft for a significant period. Such disruptions have also been reported during bushfires in Australia.

With drone flights causing delays, emergency responders are facing increasing difficulties due to emerging drone technologies.

Data reveals a troubling trend: in 2024, the United States recorded 1,190,922 drone violations—a 10 per cent increase from the previous year. Despite this rise, only 17 per cent of incidents resulted in drone seizures, and just 5 per cent of operators were apprehended.

With over one million drones registered in the US and 53,000 in Canada, experts anticipate a further rise in incidents.

To combat this issue, various tools are available for drone pilots to check restricted airspaces, alongside education campaigns initiated by government agencies. While illegal drone incursions continue to hinder emergency responses, the potential for drones to assist in firefighting efforts—through thermal imaging, surveillance, and even firefighting capabilities—remains substantial.
