New report finds South Africa fire at UPL warehouse spewed dangerous gases

A fire at a South African warehouse owned and used by UPL Ltd. has released harmful chemicals across the nearby area.

The findings have been confirmed in a provincial government report as investigations into the fire have reached an end. UPL, the world’s fifth biggest agrochemicals company, suffered the fire in July last year. The South African base in the city of Durban was looted before being set alight.

Last October, the South African government also discovered that hazardous chemicals were being stored illegally at the warehouse and were released into the nearby residential area and river system.
