Rosenbauer implements first electric aerial ladder

Rosenbauer is working to expand its electric vehicle fleet for fire departments and following on from the RT tank firefighting vehicle and a logistics vehicle they’re now working on refining the first electrified L32Z-XS aerial ladder.

High quality OEM components are used for the electrical aerial ladder, to ensure that it is just as functional, powerful and reliable as the proven standard aerial ladder. It also delivers the same ease of operation, serviceability and good availability for spare parts.

Courtesy of two or three lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 66 kWh each, the electric aerial ladder is powered by three electric motors: two for the traction drive and one for the aerial ladder operation. There is more than enough on-board energy to perform typical aerial ladder operations reliably and with no interruptions and for multiple operations should it be needed.

The electrification of firefighting vehicles is something that Rosenbauer has been concerned with and working on for more than seven years. It launched the RT – the first new-generation tank firefighting vehicle – in autumn 2020, which has been out on regular operation with the Berlin fire department.

The first prototype electric aerial ladder will be presented in summer 2022 and the test operation will be lead by the largest civil rescue organisation in Switzerland, Schutz & Rettung Zürich.
