31 Jul SFPE launches Wildland-Urban Interface resources for fire engineers and the fire service

The SFPE Educational & Scientific Foundation has announced initiatives and resources to address fires in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI).

On August 19th, the Foundation will release the Second Edition of the Wildland-Urban Interface Virtual Handbook for Fire Risk Assessment & Mitigation.

Funded by a U.S. Department of Homeland Security FEMA grant, this edition expands on the initial handbook by including community-level mitigation strategies and revising parcel-level assessment recommendations.

The updated handbook serves multiple purposes, such as training property inspectors and engaging homeowners and community leaders about WUI fire risks.

It is designed as a flexible, open-access tool for fire departments with varying experience levels.

The SFPE Foundation aims for communities to be better prepared for WUI fire risks through the handbook. It will be accessible online and as a PDF on 19 August.

Additionally, a free informational webinar titled ‘Bringing in the Community: Announcing the WUI Virtual Handbook, 2nd Edition’ will be held on 19 August to introduce the handbook’s expanded content.
