16 Jul Six firefighters dead after bushfire in South Africa

Six firefighters have tragically lost their lives while battling a bushfire in South Africa’s eastern KwaZulu-Natal province, with an additional two individuals in critical condition, according to the country’s emergency services.

The fire near the town of Boston, suspected to have been started by poachers, resulted in the demise of three firefighters at the scene, with three others succumbing to their injuries shortly after receiving medical treatment.

Additionally, at least seven other fatalities have been reported in various parts of the province due to wildfires sparked by extreme heat and winds.

This devastating event occurred against the backdrop of severe storms and flooding on the other side of South Africa, where thousands of homes and structures have been damaged or destroyed in Cape Town and surrounding areas.
