South Africa considering biometrics and AI for road transport network

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has begun a new project looking at technologies such as machine learning and facial recognition and how they can be used to improve road safety and congestion.

The project is being spearheaded by Sanral’s Technical Innovation Hub who are looking at how analytics and detect and segment images within a camera frame and analyse it as a still image.

The video and images can then be fed back to the appropriate Road Incident Management System to inform road users in real-time of any traffic congestion or other incidents.

ANPR technology is also being considered to help with policing the roads and tracking down vehicles that may be being driven illegally.
