21 Jul Suprema achieves ISO/IEC 42001 certification

Suprema has obtained ISO/IEC 42001 certification, the international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS), providing independent verification of the company’s AI governance framework across its biometric access control and physical security solutions.

Announced last week, the certification follows an independent audit by an accredited third-party certification body and covers the governance of AI used in Suprema’s BioStation Series, BioEntry Series and BioStar Platform for biometric authentication and identity verification.

Unlike product certifications that assess performance, ISO/IEC 42001 evaluates how organisations manage AI through policies, accountability, risk management and oversight. The standard is designed to verify that AI systems are developed, operated and continually improved within a structured governance framework.

Suprema said the certification provides enterprise, government, healthcare and financial sector customers with independently verified information about its AI governance practices, supporting procurement and due diligence processes as AI oversight requirements continue to evolve.

The company uses AI to improve the accuracy and processing speed of biometric authentication in its access control solutions. Suprema said its governance framework has been designed to support future AI developments while maintaining the same level of review and accountability.

The certification also comes ahead of further implementation of the EU AI Act, with obligations for high-risk AI systems scheduled to take effect from 2 August 2026. Suprema said it is monitoring regulatory developments and addressing relevant requirements as they emerge.

Suprema previously held ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security management and ISO/IEC 27701 certification for privacy information management. Now, with ISO/IEC 42001, the company said customers can assess its information security, privacy and AI governance practices within a single integrated framework.

ISO/IEC 42001 is exactly that, and we intend to maintain and build on this standard as AI governance requirements continue to develop globally.”
