08 Nov Telecom Egypt and Mobily connect to bring Egypt and Saudi Arabia closer

Telecom Egypt and the Saudi Arabian TMT company Mobily have signed an agreement to establish the first Saudi submarine cable connecting the Kingdom to Egypt.

This Mobily project will cross the Red Sea, linking Saudi Arabia and Egypt while providing points for expansion into Europe.

The cable will land at two stations—one in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and another in Duba, Saudi Arabia—and will connect to existing subsea systems in Egypt, enhancing regional infrastructure.

Mobily’s CEO, Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al-Badran, stated that this agreement reflects their commitment to improving communication between the Middle East and Europe. Telecom Egypt’s CEO, Mohamed Nasr, called it a significant milestone for both companies.

This collaboration comes as many firms focus on connecting Africa and the Middle East globally through subsea cables. Recent projects include a digital corridor by Telecom Egypt and Zain Omantel International in January 2024 and partnerships by Angola Cables and Mauritius Telecom in May 2024. These efforts follow disruptions to several key lines caused by a seismic event off the coast of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire, which impacted Internet services across Africa.
