The Speaker of Liberia’s House of Representatives, Jonathan Fonati Koffa, has denied involvement in a fire at the legislature.

He was questioned by police after the Capitol building was set alight, although there were no injuries as no one was present at the time. Authorities have launched an investigation and are offering a USD $5,000 reward for information.

Koffa stated he spent nine hours at the police station only to accompany fellow representative Frank Saah Foko. The fire occurred on Wednesday, following protests about Koffa’s potential removal from his position, during which several demonstrators were arrested.

Police Chief Gregory Coleman referred to a Facebook post by Koffa from the protests, suggesting he needed to explain it.

Koffa indicated he would provide a written statement but had not been formally questioned.

Additionally, he called for a neutral international investigation into the incident.
