A Northern Ireland firm, Vikela, in the UK, has created body armour tailored for both genders, aiming to enhance fit, comfort, and protection.

By utilising advanced materials and 3D-printing technology, Vikela seeks to resolve persistent challenges related to weight, comfort, and fit—especially those faced by women and those with non-standard body types.

Traditional body armour is primarily designed around male body shapes, often resulting in discomfort and limited mobility for women.

Vikela’s flexible stab vest not only meets but also exceeds current safety standards, and it has been recognised for its innovative approach to adapting PPE for a broader range of users.

With growing concerns over knife crime and safety risks in various occupations, the demand for high-performance protective equipment is increasing.

As PPE standards evolve, discussions about the necessity for gender-inclusive and ergonomic protective gear in military, healthcare, and security roles are becoming more prevalent.

Peter Gilleece, Vikela’s founder, was inspired to create a more adaptable solution after consulting with military personnel about the challenges of wearing heavy and rigid body armour for extended periods. He shared with Belfast Live: “I was hearing a lot of the same issues regarding the excessive weight from the bulletproof plates in their jackets over long durations.”

The company’s flagship APIS stab protection range, made from Kevlar and carbon fiber materials, has undergone extensive testing to ensure that all genders receive equal protection.

As PPE standards continue to evolve, innovations like Vikela’s could influence discussions around minimum design requirements for protective gear.

Beyond military applications, gender-adaptive PPE could significantly enhance safety for workers in high-risk professions.

Recent incidents, such as the stabbing of a nurse in a Manchester hospital, have reignited conversations about the need for effective safety equipment for frontline workers.
