Large wildfires and a severe storm in South Africa have resulted in the deaths of at least nine people, according to James Brent Styan, a spokesman for the Western Cape local government.

The storm system brought strong winds to the region, leading to flooding in Cape Town. Meanwhile, lightning and winds further east have ignited fires near Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.

As reported by The Weather Channel, four of the fatalities were caused by a fire ignited by lightning, while another victim died when a home collapsed.

Three additional individuals lost their lives in a separate fire. Approximately 10,000 residents have been evacuated as a precaution.
