22 Oct Biometric passenger touchpoints in airports to increase
Airports are rapidly adopting the use of biometric technology to help drive security, according to Valour Consultancy.
The data from Valour Consultancy suggests there will be an increase in biometrically-enabled passenger touchpoints in the world’s airports of 320% over the next decade. Its Seamless Passenger Journey in Smart Airports report is predicting these passenger touchpoints could number 51,000 by 2030 – up from the 12,079 recorded at the end of 2020.
Co-author of the study, John Devlin, said: “Most of us are familiar with a biometric face scan when we use automated border control (ABC) eGates and this kind of technology will increasingly be found in check-in kiosks, self-bag drop machines, and other eGates going forwards.”
The move towards biometric technology, according to Valour, is a drive by airlines and airport operators looking to modernise the sector, improve operational efficiency and make travel safer.
Currently, biometric integration in self-bag drop is low at just 14%, however it’s expected to rapidly grow in the next few years.
Craig Foster, Co-author of the study, commented: “There exists a sizable installed base of non-biometric units in certain key markets like Europe, many of which will be upgraded to include biometrics as privacy concerns are overcome and stakeholders look to further improve passenger processing times.”
