Face Forensics develops biometric software for disaster victim ID

Face Forensics has developed biometric corpse recognition and tattoo recognition technologies to aid international agencies to identify victims of disasters and potentially, those who have been badly burnt.

The new software is specifically designed to identify corpses based on official databases, even when they are partially obstructed by damage suffered during a disaster or tattoos on the individual bodies.

Traditionally, facial recognition technology relies on a subject’s open eyes, due to the sharp edges and high contrast of their features, according to Face Forensics. The company created the new biometric recognition technology with these challenges in mind. The software provides the ability to crop part of a face image and place it over a generic face biometric template, enabling a visual reconstruction of the face, which can then be compared to those faces which are saved in databases.

The top matches generated by the biometric recognition software are then displayed for visual confirmation by investigators. Alongside this, a number of factors can be entered to further narrow down potential possibilities.

Combined with the ability to recognise gaps, damage or patterns caused by an individual’s tattoos, the biometric recognition software is one of the most powerful to be used by investigators across the META region.

Face Forensics intends to make its Disaster Victim Identification suite – the current name of the software – available as a downloadable application, a .NET SDK and as a web service.

Facial recognition technologies continue to advance throughout the META region.
