Flooding causes explosion at Seychelles Depot

The President of Seychelles, Wavel Ramkalawam has declared a state of emergency following an explosion at a Seychelles Deport, caused by malfunctions following a landslide. The landslide itself is a result of the torrential rain and flooding in the area.

The depot stored explosives. The blast at the depot took the lives of three individuals and caused massive damage to the surrounding area, further hindering rescue teams which were attempting to recover people and property in the region already, due to mass flooding.

The President of Seychelles went on to declare a state of emergency, citing the flooding and the explosion as the reasons. The state of emergency means that 100,000+ individuals are to remain indoors with whatever supplies they have, to give essential workers more manoeuvrability.

The blast caused “massive damage” and the floods caused “major destruction,” the president’s statement said.

“The damages are huge and many facilities have moved out of their homes for security reasons […] It was as if we went through a war.”

Flooding continues to cause havoc in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa and Sudan. Scientists have stated that human-caused climate change is exacerbating weather conditions in and around Africa, leading to such flooding conditions and furthering the El Nino weather phenomenon.
