Mauritius fire claimed the lives of six pilgrims during sacred walk

A fire in Mauritius took the lives of six people after the blaze broke out during a Hindu pilgrimage.

According to the authorities, seven others at the event were injured and admitted to hospital for medical treatment.

Police believe that a bamboo cart carrying effigies of deities was set alight after it came into contact with electrical wires.

At the time of the fire, pilgrims were walking to a sacred spot called Grand Bassin Lake, ahead of a religious festival on the 8th of March.

Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, spoke about the tragedy in a statement on national television to express his condolences.

The authorities have now urged the pilgrims to adhere to safety instructions, specifically being aware of the dimensions of the kanwars structures carried by attendees.
