UN Secretary questioned Africa’s permanent seat on the Security Council

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres questioned the representation of Africa at the Security Council, and even took to social media to vent his frustrations.

Guterres posted on X, formerly Twitter about Africa’s lack of a permanent seat on the council.

He asked: “How can we accept that Africa still lacks a single Permanent Member in the Security Council?”

Due to increased questioning from Africa regarding the structure of the United Nations Security Council, Guterres addressed the lopsided representation, stating that institutions must reflect today’s world, not that of 80 years ago.

The UN Secretary also added that September’s Summit of the Future will present an opportunity to consider global governance reforms and rebuild trust.
